NEW LOOK FOR APRIL

“A cowboy’s work is never done!” has become the motto of the Lincoln County Regulators, the Cowboy Action Shooting arm of the Ruidoso Gun Club. Range maintenance and improvement was the plan and the cowpokes started by reclaiming the berms at the Ruidoso Gun Club range on Hale Lake Road in Ruidoso Downs. The berm at the Cowboy Action Shooting Range and Old West Town was extended and a new load of gravel was spread. And then “los locos vaqueros” just went wild! A Scoring Shack has been dragged in and set up to also serve as a target storage building. It might look a lot like shipping container at this point but the plan is to apply a faux finish to make it look like an old adobe building and then to add a porch. Thanks to Lincoln County Regulators Rowdy Lane and John Steele a new Old Log Cabin has been erected. After scrounging an old cabin and moving it to the range, they reconstructed it almost from scratch. Not an ad for maple syrup, this is a real log cabin! Competitors will be able to shoot from inside the cabin and a front porch is also planned for the building.Lincoln County Regulator Frank Coe has built an Old West corral and donated and installed a target enclosure. An historic reproduction of the Torreon in Old Lincoln is under construction, as well. All of the existing buildings will have porches added where appropriate and an old time board sidewalk will be erected. Although the Regulators use the tem “buildings” for the structures in the town, they are false-front buildings like one would find on a motion picture studio lot. Next in line are the Lincoln County Regulators who can paint and faux-finish.Other than the fact that the work is all being done by volunteers, the most amazing part of all of this range improvement and reclamation is that nothing is dug into the ground. No holes were dug and nothing that might be buried there has been disturbed. Everything is just resting on the ground.

JANUARY MEMBERSHIP MEETING

The meeting was held on January 9th, 2010: at La Sierra Restaurant.

Attending were Special Constable John Steele, First Deputy Rowdy Lane, Second Deputy Rusty Fillins, Banker Scarlet Lane, Ginger Malloy, Frank Coe and Carolyn Vickers. Kiowa Mike, Sgt. Shuster, Kitty Caffeine, Doc Lector, Buckskin Blue, Capitan Regulator, Gunsmoke Cowboy, Angelo Pete, Angelo’s Angel, Salazar and Linda Sanchez.

After calling the meeting to order, the Special Constable introduced the other officers. Unable to attend was Recorder Usurious Dave.

A new scoring system and timers have been purchased. Angelo Pete will donate an old computer to see if it works on the scoring system. The cost to run electrical power to the Cowboy Action Shooting Range and Old West Town for scoring will be over $300 which will include new wire and the rental of a ditcher.

Annual membership dues of $10 are now being accepted.

Plans are being made for Fifth Saturday activities that could include practice sessions, RO-I and RO-II classes and more. Emule the Special Constable with ideas. Rusty Filllins and Angelo Pete volunteered to coordinate these activities.

Cowboy Action Shooters are invited to be monthly Match Directors. Please volunteer two months in advance for safety checks by John Steele and/or Rowdy Lane, scenario writing, newspaper publicity and more. Past stages can be repeated and a PowerPoint is available. Rowdy Lane will help with the proper terms to be used in describing shooting procedures.

A work day at the Cowboy Range will be planned shortly. Get ready to volunteer, cowpokes.

The Second Annual Billy the Kid’s Breakout, “Same History, New Stages” is scheduled for August 13-14-15. Volunteers are sorely needed to work this Annual Match because we expect 85-100 shooters! Publicity will include newspapers, radio, national magazines and The Cowboy Chronicle. So that everyone in the area will know about Billy the Kid’s Breakout, we’re all going to walk through midtown Ruidoso, all gussied up and packin’ iron, to hand out flyers and posters. Rowdy Lane is going to make some huge posters! John Steele suggested a potluck dinner, a sing-along campfire and more. We’ll have dry camping for RVs, too. Committees for the event so far include:

          1. Advertising and public Relations          Sgt. Shuster

          2. Contributions and lodgers tax

          3. Match design and layout          Rowdy Lane

          4. Manager of all paper work for the match: putting together packets, sign-in, etc.

          5. Stage and Props construction           Frank Coe

          6. Target fabrication           Angelo Pete

          7. Vendors and meals

          8. Activities and awards

          9. Range management

Sgt. Shuster spent some time talking about the “The Spirit of the Game," including costuming, aliases and living the Code of the West.

Rowdy Lane made the motion to adjourn.
